History:

Fort Morgan was built between 1819 and 1833 and was used by the United States during the American Civil War. The fort is named after General Daniel Morgan, who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Fort Morgan was one of a series of forts built along the Gulf Coast to protect against attacks from European powers.

Construction on Fort Morgan began in 1819. The fort was built by enslaved African-Americans and mainly conducted through brick or mortar with some help from granite-, sandstone-, ironwork -and cement shipments sent upriver when these materials became available locally after April 1833.

The fort was active during four conflicts: the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Gulf Wars. The fort's most famous function occurred in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War.
